High official: Hamas is no longer interested in the Armistice meeting after Israel’s new Gaza plan
A Hamas official informed AFP on Tuesday that the group has lost interest in ceasefire discussions with Israel following Benjamin Netanyahu’s announcement of a new “intensified” military campaign in Gaza on Monday.
“As long as the wars of hunger and extermination persist in the Gaza Strip, there is no use in pursuing talks or contemplating new ceasefire proposals,” Basmem Naim remarked, urging the international community to press the Netanyahu administration to cease the “hunger, thirst, and killings.”
His remarks came just after Israeli military forces indicated that they would expand operations in Gaza, which would lead to significant displacement among the population, alongside attacks in Yemen and Lebanon.
After the collapse of a fragile ceasefire in mid-March, Israel resumed its bombardment of the territory, claiming that more than 70% of Gaza is under its control or under orders directing Palestinians to evacuate specific neighborhoods.
Hamas is believed to be holding a number of Israeli hostages taken during the group’s unexpected attack on October 7, 2023. Many of these hostages are thought to be deceased.
