Harris campaign rips Trump ahead of his meeting with black journalist group

Before former President Trump appeared at a National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) event this afternoon, Harris’ campaign slammed him, accusing him of “disrespecting” members of the organization in the past.

“Before Donald Trump speaks at NABJ today, let’s clearly remember who this man is. Not only does Donald Trump have a history of disrespecting NABJ members and award recipients who continue to be pillars of Black media, he also has a history of attacking the media and opposing the important role it plays in our democracy,” Jasmine Harris, black media director for the Harris campaign, said in a statement, providing links to several instances of Trump clashing with NABJ members during his presidency.

The statement came as Trump attended the NABJ convention in Chicago on Wednesday and was interviewed by three journalists, including Fox News’ Harris Faulkner.

But the former president’s attendance at the event has stirred controversy, with critics questioning the group’s decision to invite Trump.

The decision to invite Trump was defended by NABJ President Ken Lemon, who acknowledged “the concerns our members have expressed” but argued that it was “important to provide our members with an opportunity to hear directly from the candidate and hold him accountable.”

“It is our policy to make sure candidates know that an invitation does not imply an endorsement. We all agreed that this election will be very different and contentious, but the outcome will also be very different,” Lemon said in a statement.

Nevertheless, Harris’ campaign argued that Trump “lied about his record” during his appearance at the convention and spoke of “real harm he has caused to the black community.”

“He will lie about the skyrocketing rates of Black unemployment and uninsurance that our communities have suffered during his presidency,” Harris said. “He will also lie about his failed response to a pandemic that has taken the lives and livelihoods of Black Americans. He will also lie about the skyrocketing crime under his leadership and make grand claims about putting checks in people’s pockets, while we know his Project 2025 policies will cost our families thousands of dollars.”

During the event, Trump clashed with ABC News reporter Rachel Scott, complaining that she had opened the interview with a “nasty question” and calling his network “fake news.”

“Many people thought it was inappropriate for you to be here today,” Scott said. “You told four congresswomen of color who are American citizens to go back to where you came from. You described black lawyers as ‘animals’ and ‘bunnies.’ You attacked black journalists, calling them ‘losers’ and saying their questions were ‘stupid and racist.'”

“I don’t think I’ve ever been asked a worse question,” Trump shot back. “It’s embarrassing because I came here in good spirits. I love the black people of this country and I’ve done a lot for the black people of this country.”

Meanwhile, while the NABJ was unable to coordinate with Vice President Harris to have her attend the convention, Lemon said in a statement that the organization had been exploring ways for her to attend even before she became the presumptive Democratic nominee.

“At the time, we were informed by Harris’ campaign that her schedule would not allow for this request, and the last update we received[earlier this week]was that Ms. Harris would not be able to attend in person or virtually during the convention,” Lemon said. “We are in discussions about virtual options going forward and are still working to reach an agreement.”

Reached by Fox News Digital for comment, a spokesperson for Harris’ campaign pointed to an NABJ statement saying the vice president and the group hope to schedule a question-and-answer session in September.
