Harris Criticizes Supreme Court Decision Nullifying Race-Based Gerrymandering

Harris Critiques Supreme Court on Redistricting Decision

Former Vice President Kamala Harris expressed strong disapproval of the Supreme Court’s ruling to eliminate Louisiana’s race-based redistricting map, calling it a move that “eviscerates the Voting Rights Act.”

In a post on X, she labeled the decision as “an outrageous act,” suggesting it was part of a long-term conservative strategy aimed at diminishing the power of ordinary citizens. Harris further stated that the ruling appears politically driven, intending to benefit President Donald Trump and the Republican Party.

“Today’s Supreme Court decision guts the Voting Rights Act and removes protections that uphold equality and fairness in our election system,” she reported. “Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act stood as one of the last defenses for black and brown voters against maps deliberately designed to undermine political influence. That safeguard has now been removed.”

Reported by Breitbart News, the Supreme Court reached a 6-3 decision, deeming the map an “unconstitutional gerrymander.”

The conservative majority, in its ruling, acknowledged that while the map constituted an “unconstitutional gerrymander,” it did not repeal Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act.

Justice Alito, writing for the majority, stated that “Section II of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 is intended to enforce the Constitution, not to conflict with it. Unfortunately, lower courts have sometimes applied this Court’s Section II precedent in ways that compel states to discriminate based on race, which the Constitution prohibits.”

In response to the Supreme Court’s decision, former President Barack Obama remarked that it effectively undermines critical aspects of the Voting Rights Act. He argued that it allows state legislatures to manipulate congressional districts in ways that dilute the voting power of racial minorities.

“This is another example of how the current majority on the Court seems willing to stray from its vital role in ensuring equal participation in our democracy and defending minority rights from majority excesses,” said President Obama.
