Harris’ Economic Speech Was Vague, ‘We Should Expect That Going Forward’ So She Can Avoid Scrutiny

On Friday’s CNN International broadcast of “First Move,” host Julia Chatterley and CNN’s economic and political commentators The Washington Post Columnist and PBS NewsHour special correspondent Katherine Rampell said 2024 Democratic presidential candidate and Vice President Kamala Harris’ economic policy speech was vague, and predicted, “The more details are released, the more scrutiny there will be, so we should expect that going forward. Lofty ideas like reducing the deficit without telling us how to do it are easier to support.”

Before his interview with Rampell, Chatterley said the speech was “lacking in specific details.” During the interview, Chatterley said, “To me, this is kind of a poster child for a vote-getting policy announcement, skimping on too many details and concluding with, oh, by the way, I’m going to reduce the deficit at the same time. What do you think about what she announced today?”

Rampell responded, “That’s a great thing you just said. I’d love to know how she’s going to accomplish those things. I actually thought it was interesting. I thought she did a great job talking about fighting for the average worker and contrasting herself with her opponent.” [focus] “I thought tax cuts for corporations and the wealthy were very effective. … You’re right. There were very few details, and I think we should expect that to continue, because the more details you give, the more scrutiny you’re going to get. It’s easier to support lofty ideas like just reducing the deficit without telling us how to do it.”
