Harris slices Trump's national lead in half: New polling average

Vice President Harris has halved former President Trump’s lead in the newly reopened 2024 presidential election. National poll average Harris is likely to replace President Biden as President Trump’s Democratic rival.

The first edition of the new Cook Political Report average, re-released on Wednesday, shows Trump leading Harris by 1.3 points, 47.5% to 46.2%. The previous polling average, from July 21, showed Trump leading Biden by 2.7 points, 47.4% to 44.7%.

The re-released polling average includes 15 surveys of hypothetical head-to-head matchups between Harris and Trump conducted over the past 60 days, with the polls weighted by when they were conducted, according to CPR.

The results are similar to an average of national polls from The Hill and Decision Desk, which show Trump leading Harris by 1.2 percentage points, 47.8 percent to 46.6 percent.

Ms. Harris’s approval rating average has improved slightly among several key groups compared to Mr. Biden’s average as of July 21. Among women, Ms. Harris leads Mr. Trump by 7.7 percentage points (50.8 percent to 43.1 percent), while Mr. Biden previously held a 5.9-point lead.

Among black voters, Harris leads Trump by 53.1 points (72.4 percent to 19.3 percent), while Biden has a 51.5 point lead.

Among Hispanic voters, Harris leads Trump by 10.4 points (51.1 percent to 41.1 percent), while Biden has a 6.8 point lead.

The new polling average comes amid growing enthusiasm among Democrats as Harris emerges as the party’s leading candidate.
