Harris warns of implications of Supreme Court Trump immunity ruling

Speaking at a campaign rally in Nevada, Vice President Harris warned about the impact of last month’s Supreme Court ruling on former President Trump’s immunity lawsuit.

“There’s a lot at stake in this election. I want you to understand this is not 2016. This is not 2020. This time the stakes are even higher,” Harris said. “And that’s because last month the Supreme Court basically told the former president that he will be essentially immune from anything he does in the White House going forward.”

Harris was referring to the major victory the Supreme Court gave President Trump in early July.

The ideologically-lined 6-3 ruling determined that a president has absolute immunity for actions taken while in office that fall within the core responsibilities of holding that office.

The broad immunity granted to former presidents falls just short of granting Trump the full immunity he has sought in federal lawsuits over his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

Harris urged her supporters to consider what the decision would mean if Trump retakes the White House.

“Donald Trump has vowed to be a dictator from day one of his reelection. He has essentially said he would use the Department of Justice as a weapon against his political opponents and has even called for ‘abolishing the Constitution of the United States,'” she said.

Harris went on to argue that anyone who proposes repealing the U.S. Constitution “should never again stand behind the seal of the President of the United States.”

“We know what we stand for as Americans, and it all comes down to this,” she said. “We love our country, and I believe fighting for our country’s ideals is the highest form of patriotism.”

The Hill has reached out to the Trump campaign for comment.
