Former Harvard University President Larry Summers said Friday that Harvard created a hostile environment for Jewish students and violated federal civil rights laws.
As Breitbart News reported, anti-Israel protests at Harvard University were marked by disruptions near student dormitories and anti-Semitic chants. Many Jewish students feel unsafe and struggle to study.

Although Mr. Summers is no longer president of Harvard University, he remains a professor at the school.

Massachusetts lawmakers on Thursday visited Harvard University, where the camp emerged on April 24, and spoke with Jewish and Israeli students. He said the exchange clearly shows that the Cambridge campus is in violation of Title VI.

Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, or national origin in programs or activities receiving federal financial assistance. This includes harassment based on a person’s common ancestry or ethnic characteristics.

In 2019, the Trump administration extended federal civil rights protections to Jewish students on campus, declaring that it protects Jews as a racial group or nationality, not just a religious group.
This change was necessary because violent anti-Israel protests on campus became the main form of anti-Semitism encountered by Jewish students. The phenomenon exploded after October 7, with sit-ins and “encampments.”
The Education Department’s Office for Civil Rights is investigating Harvard and other universities, as is the Republican-led House of Representatives. But Attorney General Merrick Garland and Kristen Clark, the Justice Department’s civil rights division, have remained silent.
Clark is scheduled to speak at Columbia University Law School’s commencement ceremony on Monday, days after New York City police removed anti-Israel students who violently occupied campus halls.
