Harvard President Allegedly Dismissing Settlement Discussions for Court Fight

Harvard’s Stance on Trump Administration Disputes

Harvard University has reportedly opted to address disputes with the Trump administration through legal channels rather than direct negotiation. President Alan Gerber has expressed that claims suggesting Ivy League schools, including Harvard, are negotiating deals with the administration are misleading. He believes that a recent report regarding a supposed $500 million agreement is unfounded and attributed to White House officials.

Initially, a narrative of this potentially contentious transaction surfaced, with sources from The New York Times indicating that a similar report had credible backing. In contrast to Columbia University’s recent collaboration involving a $200 million agreement, Harvard seems unwilling to appoint an external monitor for oversight.

The White House, while not directly responding to Gerber’s statements, has indicated ongoing negotiations with the university. Deputy Chief Minister Harrison Fields noted that the administration continues to pursue its agenda, which includes combating anti-Semitism and ensuring national security.

Harvard has already initiated several lawsuits against the administration regarding funding cuts and challenges that affect international student admissions. Recently, the Department of Health and Human Services referred Harvard to the Department of Justice, claiming the university demonstrated a lack of compliance concerning anti-Semitic harassment.

Additionally, the Trump administration has already cut over $2 billion in funding to various universities, including attempts to limit their ability to accommodate international students. Harvard declined to agree to a settlement proposed in April, asserting a need to protect its academic and free speech rights, leading to further funding cuts from the administration.

While these actions against Harvard’s international student programs have faced legal hurdles, the State Department has initiated inquiries into the university’s foreign student visa practices. A lawsuit about the university’s funding is currently under review by US District Court Judge Alison Burrows, who previously blocked the 2017 travel ban.

Moreover, Harvard is under federal examination regarding its diversity practices and purportedly illegal use of racial preferences, as well as concerns over inaccurate reporting of foreign donations.
