But the results weren’t what he expected, so he restarted the study with eight new RAs.
“They came up with exactly the same answer,” he said, but when they announced their findings, “all hell broke loose.”
“It was a 104-page thick academic economics paper with 150 pages of appendices. When I received the first email, the posted time was 4 minutes. [saying]”This is full of shit”…and I replied, “How did you read it so fast?!”
“I had a colleague take me there and say, ‘Please don’t publish this. Please don’t publish this. Please don’t publish this.’ You’re going to ruin your career,” Dr. Fryer continued. Ta. “I said to them, ‘If there’s a bias against the second part, do you think we should publish it?’ And they said, ‘Well, I guess that makes sense.’ Told.”
Thankfully, Dr. Fryer was unfazed by his colleagues and responded, “I guarantee you, we’ll publish it.”
But his boldness paid off.
“I lived under police protection for about 30 or 40 days,” he said. “I was going to the grocery store to buy diapers with armed security guards. It was crazy.”
“People don’t like the truth,” Pat says.
“All he did was present the facts, which gets you into trouble,” agrees Keith Marinak.
