Harvard has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration over “illegal” multi-billion dollar budget cuts to school research funds.
“Some time ago, we filed a lawsuit to stop the funding freeze as it is illegal and exceeds government authority,” Harvard President Alan Gerber wrote in a post on X.
The move comes just a day after the Trump administration reportedly planned to cut another $1 billion in federal grants and contracts to universities, in addition to the $2.2 billion cut announced last week. Harvard Crimson was first reported.
Wall Street Journal Sources familiar with the issue report that $1 billion is related to health research funding for the Elite Massachusetts Ivy League Schools.
“The trade-offs to Harvard and other universities are clear. It allows the government to micromanage academic institutions or endanger the institution’s ability to pursue medical breakthroughs, scientific discoveries and innovative solutions,” a Harvard lawyer filed Monday.

Harvard sues the Trump administration
In a 51-page complaint obtained by the outlet, Harvard accused the Trump administration of illegally freezing billions, freeing research funds, and putting pressure on universities to restructure its governance, academic programs and employment practices.
The complaint alleges that Freeze violates the initial amendment by “imposing perspective-based terms on Harvard funding.”
In a recent social media post, Trump claimed Harvard University was “lost a way” and was unworthy of federal funds.

“Harvard hires almost all awakened, left and right, idiot, “birdbrain,” who can teach students about failure, and can only teach so-called “future leaders,” Trump writes. “Look at the recent past of their plagiarist presidents who were so embarrassed by Harvard before the United States Congress.
“Harvard is a joke, teaches hatred and stupidity, and should no longer receive federal funds.”
