Harvard University announcement Litigations against the Trump administration’s actions have been cut after billions of dollars in federal funds to universities have been cut.
The administration accused Harvard officials of not doing enough to protect Jewish students in light of pro-Hamas protests that often pose, intimidate and sometimes violence. The university alleged that a $2.2 billion cut in federal funds amounted to a violation of the First Amendment.
“Taxpayer funds are privileges and Harvard is unable to meet the basic conditions necessary to access that privilege.”
Letter from Harvard President Alan Gerber It was rejected The allegations acknowledged that the university had room for improvement.
“The government cited university responses to anti-Semitism as justification for illegal action. We are very aware of the effective concerns of rising anti-Semitism, both as Jews and as Americans,” Gerber wrote. “To deal with it effectively requires understanding, intention and vigilance. Harvard takes its job seriously. We continue to fight the urgency and hatred that we demand when we fully comply with our legal obligations. It’s not just our legal liability. It’s our moral obligation.”
The lawsuit said the administration’s actions threaten Harvard’s independence and put “critical life-saving and pass-breaking research” at campus.
The administration issued a list of requests to universities and when they refused to follow, the Joint Task Force on Fighting Anti-Semitism drew billions of dollars with multi-year grants.
“Federal subsidized gravy trains to institutions like Harvard are coming to an end in enriching bureaucrats who are heavily overpaid taxes from struggling American families,” read a statement from White House spokesman Harrison Fields. “Taxpayer funds are privileges and Harvard is unable to meet the basic conditions necessary to access that privilege.”
The university claims it has no connection to the fight against anti-Semitism and cutting funding for the university.
“The government has not identified anti-Semitism concerns and reasonable connections to medical, scientific, technical and other research aimed at saving American lives, promoting American success, maintaining America’s security and maintaining America’s status in innovation,” the lawsuit states.
President Donald Trump also threatened to strip the university of its tax-free status.
