President Trump directs $200 billion in research funding

The White House has announced plans to allocate $200 billion in federal research funding, shifting it from universities to individual scientists. This move aims to speed up the progress of artificial intelligence development.

Historically, Ivy League universities have garnered significant foreign investments, particularly from countries like China. For instance, recent listings compiled by the U.S. Department of Education reveal that Harvard University leads the pack in receiving foreign funding.

Senator Tom Cotton from Arkansas has criticized Harvard for its financial ties to China and other nations, stressing the need for scrutiny over the money flowing into higher education institutions linked to China. He has urged Education Secretary Linda McMahon to investigate these financial relationships.

Cotton expressed concern that numerous transactions with sanctioned Chinese firms remain unreported, urging additional investigation into American universities’ connections to the Chinese government.

As of January, the data shows that federally funded universities secured over $6.8 billion from the Chinese, with more than $300 million stemming from sanctioned entities. Specifically, Harvard has received upward of $630 million from Chinese companies, with significant portions linked to initiatives that may compromise U.S. national security.

Additionally, funding is not solely coming from China; other nations of concern, like Venezuela and Russia, have also contributed sizable amounts to Harvard, totaling millions.

Scrutiny extends beyond Harvard, as the top five foreign funders listed include notable Chinese companies, donating around $119 million to various universities throughout the U.S. In response to concerns about foreign influence, the Education Department plans to enhance its reporting system to ensure transparency regarding these financial ties.

In a previous statement, McMahon emphasized the obligation of taxpayer-funded institutions to fully disclose their international financial relationships to uphold national security and integrity.
