Federal Subpoenas Issued in Investigation of Cuba Support

Federal officials have issued subpoenas to political activist Hasan Piker and Code Pink co-founder Susan Medea Benjamin. This is part of an ongoing investigation into whether U.S. organizations and individuals violated laws and sanctions while providing support to Cuba’s communist regime.

The investigation focuses on a trip in March to Cuba undertaken by Piker and Benjamin along with other activists. They are being scrutinized for potentially breaching U.S. sanctions laws by financially supporting, coordinating, and shipping goods to Cuba, which may have involved contact with Cuban government officials. The Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control has sent administrative subpoenas to them.

These subpoenas, formally termed “requests for information,” aim to gather details about financial transactions, logistical arrangements, and communications related to the trip sponsored by Nuestra América Convoy—a gathering of communist sympathizers and activists dedicated to delivering supplies to the Cuban government.

This investigation is not isolated; it reflects a broader initiative by Treasury, State, and Justice officials aimed at mitigating foreign influence in the U.S. More specifically, it addresses concerns about political violence and extremist movements, particularly those labeled as supportive of terrorism by U.S. authorities. Federal agencies are increasingly worried about foreign actors shaping U.S. political narratives and inciting unrest.

Interestingly, since marrying Jodi Evans, another key member of Code Pink, in 2017, Singham has reportedly funneled $278 million into various nonprofits that espouse pro-China and anti-U.S. sentiments. Evans, who is also under investigation related to the March trip, received $1.33 million from Singham post-marriage.

The Nuestra América Convoy included representatives from around the globe, with organizations ranging from the Venceremos Brigades to the Democratic Socialists of America playing active roles. An estimated 650 members from 120 organizations across 33 countries were involved.

The investigation regarding the delivery of goods and logistics is part of a wider effort that seems to implicate around 40 Americans and a few foreign nationals, including a notable Brazilian activist tied to anti-American Marxist movements. This could lead to further citations as the inquiry unfolds.

The subpoenas represent a significant action by federal authorities, targeting a network of activists deemed extreme and potentially enriching communist regimes around the world under the guise of humanitarian aid and solidarity with oppressed communities.

Additionally, a Fox News Digital investigation found that 145 activist organizations in the U.S. collectively hold around $1 billion in revenue, and this aspect is under scrutiny by Justice and Treasury officials for potential influence operations by Cuba and other foreign actors.

U.S. law restricts financial transactions with Cuba, governed by the Office of Foreign Assets Control. These laws prohibit unauthorized travel-related transactions and the export of goods without exceptions for specific activities aimed at helping the Cuban people.

Piker, a popular leftist political streamer, has gained notoriety for his Marxist views and anti-American rhetoric, which have sometimes sparked backlash. Recently, he revealed intentions to visit Cuba via social media. Photos from the trip showed him alongside Evans, both displaying expressions of spirited solidarity.

Piker has also critiqued the U.S. indictment of Cuban leaders as unfounded, labeling the prosecution a tactic to amplify pressure on Cuba, quipping that former President Trump resembled a bully in this context. Over the recent weeks, he has defended Cuba’s regime during live streams while discussing various controversial topics.

On a different note, Benjamin has made her mark in activism through numerous public appearances, vocally opposing U.S. policies while seemingly championing various authoritarian regimes. Recently, she was spotted engaging with fellow activists, including during a trip to Cuba.

Controversy continues to surround Piker, particularly following remarks he made in the past that were perceived as insensitively phrased, leading to accusations of anti-Semitism—which he denies, insisting that criticism of Israel is not anti-Jewish.

The investigation extends to notable figures such as Isra Hirsi, Rep. Ilhan Omar’s daughter, prompting questions about whether Omar supported her daughter’s trip financially, though Omar has yet to comment publicly.

Meanwhile, Olivia DiNucci, a coordinator for Code Pink, is also being investigated. Her theatrical activist style has often drawn attention, especially during high-profile events.

Authorities are working to determine if the activities associated with the caravan breached U.S. sanctions laws. Legal experts believe the outcome of the subpoenas will dictate whether the situation escalates to criminal violations or remains a civil matter.

Overall, the scrutiny of these activists marks a significant development in the U.S. government’s approach to foreign influence and the support of communist regimes. Federal officials aim to clarify the extent and legality of any potential misconduct that may have taken place.
