Hasan Piker’s Controversial Remarks on Antisemitism
Hasan Piker, a far-left streamer, stirred controversy by criticizing pro-Israel Jewish individuals. He argued that their “hysterical” reactions to anti-Israel sentiments are contributing to antisemitism, calling himself the “Rush Limbaugh for Zoomers.”
The New Jersey native, aged 35, is set to participate in a protest against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in New York. He deemed the Jewish community “ridiculous” and “hysterical” for linking criticism of Israel to antisemitism, asserting that this connection fuels rising hate.
In an interview with the Financial Times, Piker remarked, “And perhaps even more dangerously from their perspective, that also legitimizes the antisemites because [they] will point to that and go, ‘See? They’re doing it again.’” This comment was made in response to a question about earlier statements where he suggested that Jews overly focused on Israel are vulnerable to attacks.
Piker, who rose to prominence through his uncle Cenk Uygur, founder of The Young Turks, claims a follower base exceeding three million on Twitch, alongside millions more on various social media platforms. His audience largely consists of young men, many of whom rely on him for news.
Interestingly, he dismissed the notion that he’s fostering a left-wing online “manosphere”—akin to Joe Rogan’s right-leaning audience that rallied support for Trump in the 2024 election. “A lot of these manosphere guys don’t know what they’re talking about — their level of involvement with politics is super, super basic,” he expressed in the interview.
Instead, Piker positions himself as a leftist shock jock, drawing a parallel to the late conservative icon Rush Limbaugh, touted by Trump as the “greatest radio host of all time.” Limbaugh passed away in February 2021 at the age of 70 after battling cancer.
Throughout his career, Piker has supported progressive Democrats, including Michigan’s Abdul El-Sayed during the midterm elections. However, some members of the party are starting to distance themselves from him due to his extreme views, such as claiming the US is worse than al-Qaeda.
