Hawaii Gov. Josh Green on Trump wanting states to run education: “I’ll take it”

Hawaii Gov. Josh Green, d., said Wednesday that when plans arise to put President Trump's education policies into the state's hands, he would “take it” and “use it well” the money that flows into the governor's office.

“I'll take it. You know, I spent time with the president a few weeks ago with all the other governors. If that money flows to our governor, we'll make good use of it,” Green told News Nation's Blake Berman on “The Hill.” “For perspective, for those who are looking, the current 11% of my entire budget on education comes from the federal government.”

“I need them… I need those dollars for children with autism, for meals at our school, for autism, for special education for so many needs. So if the dollars flow to us and we remove bureaucracy, the governor would welcome the resources,” he added.

Green's comments came the day after the Department of Education revealed that nearly half of its workforce was fired. The movement by the department follows efforts by other Trump administrations to dramatically reshape the federal government.

“My dream is to move the Department of Education, to move education to the state, which will allow the state to implement education on behalf of the bureaucrats working in Washington,” Trump said Wednesday.

“I think if you go back to Iowa and Indiana and all the states that run really well, you'll be 30, almost 40. They're just as good as Denmark.

Trump also said Wednesday that Education Secretary Linda McMahon was responsible for a massive layoff in her department.

“When we cut — we want to cut — but we want to cut people who aren't working or doing a good job. We keep the best people. And Linda McMahon is a real expert, very, very sophisticated businessman, she cut a lot, but she had the best people, and we'll see how it works,” the president said.
