Hawaiian Judge Denies Bail to Doctor Charged with Attempted Murder
A judge in Hawaii has denied bail to a doctor accused of trying to kill his wife during a hike on a trail in Honolulu back in March.
Dr. Gerhard Konig, an anesthesiologist aged 46, faces charges of attempted second-degree murder for allegedly attacking his wife on the Paris Lookout Trail on Oahu. His bail had been set at $5 million previously.
Konig has pleaded not guilty to these charges.
During the hearing, his attorney argued that Konig had no prior criminal record and requested a “reasonable” bail amount. However, prosecutors countered that Konig represented a significant flight risk, noting he attempted to flee after the alleged incident.
According to court documents, following the attack, Konig called his adult son and reportedly said, “I tried to kill your stepmother.”
Judge Paul Wong rejected the bail motion, citing not only the attempted flight but also the danger Konig posed to his wife.
Witness statements indicated that Konig’s wife mentioned he had acted suspiciously, encouraging her to take a selfie near a cliff edge. After she declined, he became aggressive, allegedly pushing her into the bushes and striking her multiple times with a rock.
In distress, she shouted for help and ran to other hikers for assistance. One hiker, referred to as “Amanda,” reported seeing Konig attack his wife.
As Konig was pursued by police after the incident, he was overheard asking, “Wait, is she not dead?” once he was apprehended.
Investigators later discovered syringes and vials of anesthetic at Konig’s residence. His wife noted finding a fanny pack belonging to him that contained a vial and a syringe. This evidence was sent to Honolulu police for further examination.
Konig’s lawyer, Thomas Otake, mentioned in court that it’s not unusual for doctors to possess medical supplies at home. He sought a bail reduction to between $100,000 and $200,000, but the judge denied this request.
The Maui health board has confirmed that Konig has been suspended from his position as an independent contractor at Maui Memorial Medical Center while the investigation is ongoing.
In a statement, a spokesperson for Maui Health clarified that Konig’s medical privileges have been suspended during this incident, and they emphasized the seriousness of patient safety and their collaboration with authorities.
