Hawaii man allegedly starved, beat, and burned his girlfriend’s 2-year-old daughter for months, police say

Police said they received a call around 2 p.m. Saturday from Hilo Medical Center emergency room medical personnel reporting a girl with serious injuries who was taken to the emergency room for treatment.

Lt. Rio Amon Wilkins, chief of the Hawaii Police Department’s criminal investigations division, said police met with the staff member and the child’s mother.

The police report said the girl appeared to be suffering from a lack of fluids as well as nutrition. She also displayed a variety of injuries, including bruises in various stages of healing, a broken femur and ribs in various stages of healing, and various burn scars.

The girl was taken to Kapiolani Medical Center on Oahu, where her condition is stable.

Investigators discovered 31-year-old Clayton Ernest Zaragoza was living with the girl’s 23-year-old mother in a Mountain View home. Police said they believe he had been abusing her for several months.

On Sunday, he was charged with first-degree assault, second-degree assault, family abuse and two counts of second-degree endangering the welfare of a minor.

“We’re still putting everything together,” he said. “And we are still considering potential charges against the mother and additional charges against Mr. Zaragoza.”

He went on to say that people should not turn a blind eye when they see signs of possible abuse.

“That’s your job,” Eamonn Wilkins added. “Our job is to protect the children in our community, even if they are not our own.”

Zaragoza’s bail was set at $85,000.
