A man shot and killed a woman in Hawaii, stole her car at gunpoint, then died in a shootout with police that left two officers injured, authorities said.
Honolulu Police Chief Arthur “Joe” Logan said at a news conference that police began searching for the man on New Year's Day Monday after a woman claimed she shot him. Logan said the man opened fire on police at three different locations before being shot and killed by police near the main campus of the University of Hawaii in Honolulu around 4 p.m.

The man was taken to a hospital, where he died, the police chief said. Two injured police officers underwent surgery on Monday. Their conditions were not immediately known Tuesday.

A fourth man was injured by the police vehicle, Logan said, adding that police were investigating whether he was involved.
Asked why police didn't notify the public about the ongoing pursuit, Logan said: “We just needed to focus on apprehending the person.” He added that he doesn't want people to get caught up in the chase.
