New Penalties Proposed for Flag Burning
Senator Josh Hawley from Missouri is set to introduce legislation on Thursday that aims to impose stricter penalties on those who burn American flags. This move comes in light of rising tensions around recent protests, particularly the ones in Los Angeles, where images showed demonstrators setting the flag on fire and waving foreign flags instead.
Hawley indicated that during a conversation with former President Donald Trump, they both agreed that there needs to be a stronger emphasis on respecting the American flag. If the bill is successful, anyone convicted of burning the flag could face an additional year in prison, along with penalties related to riot convictions.
“I believe all Republicans should support this, even those from across the aisle,” Hawley remarked in an interview. “The flag represents our nation.”
He referenced ongoing protests, emphasizing how these actions undermine national symbols. Hawley also pointed out a crucial distinction in legal interpretations; he contends that the legal protections around flag burning could be reconsidered, particularly when it pertains to acts that incite federal crimes like riots.
Trump, in a recent address, dismissed those responsible for such acts, calling them “animals” and lamenting that they wave flags from other countries, not the United States. He has expressed that those who burn the American flag should face jail time, suggesting that this is a necessary course of action. “We’ll make efforts to ensure this gets done, and Senator Hawley is fully on board,” Trump added.
During his speech, Trump also mentioned an ongoing inquiry to determine the funding behind these protests, indicating they are trying to track the financial support for the mobs involved.
As the discussion unfolds, Hawley has initiated a Congressional investigation aimed at uncovering more about the financial backing of such movements. The proposed bill and its implications are expected to provoke spirited debates in the coming days.
