‘He Calls Me Daughter’ Examines Father Wounds and the Healing Through Christ, According to the Director

A new film by the director known for faith-based documentaries delves into the struggles many women face with their earthly fathers and how healing can be found through the love of their Heavenly Father.

he calls me daughter, which will be shown in theaters on March 17th and 18th, features comedian Chonda Pierce, In-N-Out Burger president Lynsey Snyder, and writer Meg Meeker. According to director Rick Altizer, these important themes are frequently overlooked and pushed aside.

Altizer, who has previously directed films like Show Me the Father, Russ Tuff: I Still Believe, and Chonda Pierce: Laughing in the Dark, emphasized the impact of our earthly fathers on our understanding of God. “We tend to project our earthly father’s characteristics onto our perception of our Heavenly Father,” he shared.

However, he pointed out that many women are burdened by “father wounds,” which can hinder their ability to see themselves as “daughters of God” or “daughters of kings.” This can lead to conflicting feelings in their relationship with God. “You might be active in church, have a family, and work… but deep down, you struggle with seeing God as a father because the concept has been distorted for you. It’s a challenge to grasp your true identity when you haven’t felt that fatherly love,” he explained.

In the New Testament, references to God as a father are abundant, Altizer noted. “In John 14, the term ‘Father’ appears 23 times, highlighting how central it is to God’s identity. If we’re not connecting with that truth, we’re missing something vital in our spiritual journey.”

His aim, Altizer said, is to help women heal from their father’s wounds, reconnect with God, and rediscover their identities as daughters, while deepening their understanding of God’s unconditional love.

The film concludes by providing additional resources.

“The core message of the movie is this: You are loved by a perfect Heavenly Father, who is not like your earthly father. He loves you without flaws and chose you. You belong to Him, and He offers you validation, worth, and joy.”
