Karine Jean-Pierre Testifies Before Oversight Committee
Former White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre appeared before the House Oversight Committee, contributing to an investigation into former President Joe Biden’s physical and cognitive fitness during his time in office.
Jean-Pierre didn’t address reporters before or after her lengthy five-hour interview on Capitol Hill.
According to a source familiar with her testimony, she indicated that she didn’t notice any decline in Biden’s competency from 2009 to 2025.
“She did acknowledge that President Biden isn’t the same speaker he was when she first met him,” the source mentioned, adding, “but she didn’t inquire about why his speaking had changed.”
Previously, Jean-Pierre defended Biden during the June 2024 debate against Donald Trump, where Trump made a memorable remark regarding Biden’s unclear statement, suggesting he wasn’t even aware of what he had said.
At a press briefing after the debate, she stated confidently that Biden was “as sharp as ever.”
Additionally, Jean-Pierre claimed during her tenure that she was informed by “senior staff” that Biden was suffering from a cold.
Her two years in the Biden administration also included dismissing critical online videos about Biden’s mental abilities as “cheap fakes.” She recalled that a comment about these videos appeared in her briefing materials but was unsure of who had added it.
Jean-Pierre mentioned that various advisors contributed to her press binder, but those specific talking points regarding Biden’s health were managed at the senior level.
Her role as press secretary commenced in 2022 when she took over from Jen Psaki and concluded with the end of Biden’s term in early 2025. Shortly after leaving her position, she announced plans to switch from the Democratic Party to become an Independent and revealed her upcoming book about her experiences in the Biden administration.
The book, titled “Independent: A Look Inside a Broken White House, Outside the Party Lines,” is scheduled for release on October 21, 2025. Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer remarked that her interview was timed strategically due to the content of her memoir.
“We believe that she’s written some things in the book that are going to be of interest to our entire investigation,” Comer noted to reporters.
This investigation originated during the Trump administration, following evidence suggesting that the Biden White House employed the autopen to authorize clemency on Biden’s behalf without his consent.
Biden’s White House physician, Dr. Kevin O’Connor, was subpoenaed to testify but invoked the Fifth Amendment when asked about the former president’s health.
