Heartbroken parents release video of their 8-year-old daughter choking at school and seek answers

The heartbroken parents of an 8-year-old girl who tragically choked to death at her Texas elementary school have shared distressing footage depicting her urgent, yet unsuccessful, efforts to seek help.

Adrian Thompson began choking during lunch at Velma Penny Elementary School in Lindale on April 15. The released video shows her frantically waving her arms and signaling for assistance before running to the nurse’s office, where she became blue and collapsed, according to CBS 19.

After authorities concluded their investigation and ruled the incident as an accident with no criminal wrongdoing, Thompson’s parents expressed their frustration, feeling that the lack of immediate aid when their daughter clearly needed it was being overlooked.

“If the footage showed the adults springing into action as soon as Adrian started choking, I would still be devastated by her passing,” said her grieving mother, Anna Thompson. “But that’s not what we see in the video. That’s why we think people need to know about this.”

The footage indicates that around 11:40 a.m., Adrian stood up from her lunch table, coughing and heaving into a napkin, and clutching her throat as she navigated through the cafeteria, clearly in distress.

According to the Texas Rangers’ report, “Adrian’s demeanor and actions appear to be those of someone coughing or choking.”

As Adrian approached a staff member, she gestured toward her mouth. However, the employee apparently misinterpreted the situation, thinking Adrian needed to vomit, and escorted her to a trash can instead.

The staff member asked if Adrian wanted to go to the restroom, to which she nodded and hurried off. Seconds later, Adrian re-entered the cafeteria, waving her arms at the same employee before rushing toward the nurse’s office.

The nurse later reported that Adrian was “pointing to her mouth and trying to speak” before she began turning “blue in the face.”

Immediately, the nurse started performing the Heimlich maneuver, but as Adrian collapsed, she switched to an anti-choking device and began CPR when she couldn’t find a pulse.

At 11:45 a.m. — roughly five minutes after Adrian began choking — the school principal called 911. Emergency services arrived about 10 minutes later after Adrian started choking.

The security camera footage shows responders wheeling her out of the school on a gurney while continuing chest compressions, and the ambulance departed the school at noon.

Adrian was taken to a local hospital and then transferred to Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth, where she sadly passed away the following day.

Medical experts note that during the first three minutes of a choking incident, individuals can experience breathing restrictions, panic, and possible unconsciousness. Brain damage can begin after four minutes, and death may occur at six minutes or longer.

The Texas Rangers determined that no criminal offense was committed regarding Adrian’s death, which the medical examiner classified as an accident due to choking.

Lindale Independent School District Superintendent Stan Surratt stated that the school has revised its safety procedures, enhanced staff training, and put in place new policies to help prevent occurrences like this in the future.

“We understand that we can’t anticipate every emergency. Nonetheless, we are dedicated to reviewing our operations, finding ways to improve, and ensuring our staff members have the necessary resources and training to handle emergencies effectively,” he said.

Lindale is a small community with a population of about 6,000, situated roughly 90 miles east of Dallas.
