Heartless thieves loot tribute to fallen California officers: ‘Who would sink this low?’

Communities in Northern California are understandably upset after thieves vandalized local memorials honoring fallen officers and soldiers in Solano County, stealing bronze stars and shields.

Reports indicate that 21 bronze stars that memorialized deceased officers and Congress members were taken from the Peace Officers Memorial (POM) in Fairfield, as per a post by the Solano County Sheriff’s Office on social media.

The culprits didn’t stop there; they also targeted the Veterans Memorial, which pays tribute to individuals who served the nation.

“Not only did those involved violate the sanctity of the POM, honoring the 21 law enforcement officers who dedicated their lives to protecting this county, but they also looted the Veterans Memorial, taking a plaque that acknowledged the sacrifices of Solano County’s servicemen and women,” stated the sheriff’s office in a post.

“Furthermore, bronze plaques from the courthouse were also taken.”

“Let me be clear: this isn’t just a random theft or negligent vandalism,” added the sheriff’s office. “These actions were premeditated, calculated intrusions into a sacred space meant for remembrance and public service.”

“This was an assault on the memories of fallen peace officers and veterans, and an affront to their families who carry on their legacies. It’s an attack on our community and the values we cherish: honor, sacrifice, respect, and civility.”

Solano County Sheriff Brad DeWall mentioned they are examining surveillance footage to identify the perpetrator.

“In my 35 years here, nothing like this has transpired. Who could descend to such depths to uproot a star representing those who gave their lives for this county and its people?” DeWall remarked.

The Veterans Memorial in Vallejo also faced a similar attack, with all its plaques stolen.

Former Vallejo police officer Ron Turner expressed the community’s outrage, saying, “People are really upset and they’re not going to accept this anymore; they’re quite vocal.”

He estimated the cost of the stolen stars, approximately $2,600 each, adding up to a staggering loss of around $54,000.

To complicate matters, the Fairfield area is approaching its annual memorial service on May 13, where law enforcement and community members come together to honor the sacrifices of these 21 heroes.

“Those responsible should know this: you didn’t just steal metal. You took away a symbol of sacrifice, duty, and patriotism,” he added.

Turner continued, “You’ve disrespected a memorial of profound significance to this county. We will work relentlessly to track you down and ensure justice is served.”

The sheriff’s office has pledged to restore the monument.

“This county will always honor its heroes; we won’t allow anyone to undermine that.”

Late Thursday, authorities reported that an arrest has been made. Joshua Gonzalez, 40, from Vallejo, is facing pending charges in connection with the case.

Sergeant Rex Hawkins shared that several hundred pounds of stolen metal had been recovered thus far, and indicated that the investigation remains active.

“I’m incredibly proud of our detectives and their partners for their relentless pursuit of leads to resolve this case. We will catch you,” DeWall stated post-arrest.

Hawkins also mentioned that the department is exploring temporary fixes for the Peace Officers Memorial, with plans for a permanent replacement down the line.
