Defense Secretary Pete Hegses shared insights on how President Trump “summons the courage” needed during these challenging times.

“We’ll collaborate and amplify efforts with our law enforcement allies,” Hegses mentioned on Ingraham’s show.

In a move to address rising crime rates, Trump declared a “Day of Liberation,” placing the Washington D.C. police under federal oversight. Additionally, Hegses noted that 800 National Guard troops would be sent to assist “next week.”

This announcement follows incidents of violence in the city, including an attack on a former staff member and the fatal shooting of a 21-year-old Congressional intern near the White House.

“If chaos is prevalent in the capital, how will other countries perceive it if they can’t maintain order?” Hegses posed.

When asked by Laura Ingraham about the duration of the military’s presence in D.C., Hegses described it as “conditional.” He stressed that the administration’s goal is to bolster law enforcement’s ability to handle arrests effectively.

“The discussion around cashless bail and sanctuary cities is crucial,” Hegses explained. “If something is illegal in D.C., clearly that’s a concern; all aspects of law and order are our top priority.”

The National Guard’s deployment could span several weeks or months, but it’s ultimately a decision for the President, he added.

Hegses also addressed accusations of the Trump administration being authoritarian, claiming such critiques are akin to those made in Los Angeles during protests regarding ICE personnel.

“I’ve heard, ‘You’re just targeting political opponents,’ but that’s not the case. Our intentions are consistently misunderstood,” Hegses argued.

He concluded by stating, “This president aims to implement law and order legally and constitutionally. It’s puzzling why some oppose his courage to act.”
