Israeli President Praises Trump’s Military Action
Israeli President Isaac Herzog commended President Donald Trump for what he termed a “bold decision” following the successful US military strike on three Iranian nuclear facilities. Herzog described the strike as “historic” and indicated that it could potentially alter the dynamics in the Middle East.
The US conducted the operation late Saturday, targeting Iran’s nuclear enrichment sites in Natanz, Isfahan, and Fordow. Tomahawk missiles were launched at two facilities, alongside B-2 bombers deploying bunker-buster bombs against the interests of Iran’s submarine program. President Trump characterized the action as “an epic military success.” Intelligence reports from both the US and Israel had confirmed that Iran had amassed uranium enriched to over 60%, a level not used for civilian purposes, and exclusively suited for weaponry.
Herzog expressed gratitude towards Trump, emphasizing the significance of the strike on Iran’s nuclear ambitions. In the past, Iran’s nuclear program has been a longstanding concern for the US. Previous attempts, notably during Barack Obama’s administration, involved drafting the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), often referred to as the “Iran nuclear deal.” While this agreement aimed to curb Iran’s nuclear pursuits, it allowed for limited uranium enrichment under international oversight in exchange for financial incentives and easing of sanctions.
Critics of the deal included figures across the political spectrum, such as New York Senator Chuck Schumer and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, both of whom opposed the initiative. Eventually, Trump withdrew from this agreement in 2018.
In recent developments, President Joe Biden sought to revive the JCPOA. His efforts, however, faced significant challenges following heightened tensions after the October 7 attack, which led to Israel striking Iranian allies, including groups like Hamas and Hezbollah.
When Trump assumed office, he provided Iran with a 60-day deadline to cease its nuclear enrichment activities, but Iran failed to meet this deadline. Subsequently, Israel executed a series of strikes on Iranian nuclear sites and IRGC targets.
Now, the situation presents a complex picture. There’s a lingering uncertainty regarding the implications of Trump’s actions for the broader geopolitical landscape in the Middle East, especially concerning Iran’s influence.
