Hezbollah and Iran Coordinate Attacks on Israel

On Tuesday, national security experts noted a coordinated attack strategy between Hezbollah and Iran, revealing reports of fatal cluster munitions hitting Israel in concurrent strikes.

This escalation marks the 11th day of Operation Epic Fury and Operation Roaring Lion, joint efforts by the US and Israel aimed at Iran, indicating a potential intensification of the regional conflict.

Kobi Michael, a senior researcher at the National Security Institute, noted that “Hezbollah is fully engaged in the war and appears to be working very well with Iran right now.” He spoke from an air raid shelter near Tel Aviv and mentioned that “most of Hezbollah’s rockets and drones are launched at the same time as Iranian missiles.”

Israel has confirmed that Iran is, indeed, utilizing cluster munitions, presenting a complicated challenge to its air defenses, as reported by the Associated Press. These munitions explode at a high altitude, scattering smaller submunitions across a broad area. At night, the small bombs, which look like orange fireballs, are hard to intercept and have been notably lethal.

Despite Israel’s robust air defense system, a FOX News correspondent indicated that intercepting half of the missiles is particularly challenging due to their nature. Michael emphasized that “Iran’s usage of cluster missiles, especially with the intent to target civilians, should be viewed as an unconventional weapons tactic,” calling for an appropriate response from both the US and Israel.

Cluster munitions are prohibited in over 120 countries under international agreements due to their indiscriminate effects and the extensive harm they cause to civilian populations.

Michael also cited Hezbollah’s strategies based on previous conflicts with Israel, suggesting that they’re reverting to guerrilla tactics in southern Lebanon. This includes operating in small units and minimizing communication to avoid detection by Israeli forces.

With ongoing airstrikes from the Israeli Defense Forces targeting Hezbollah’s infrastructure in Beirut’s southern suburbs, local citizens remain in a heightened state of alert, often hiding in shelters as rockets continue to threaten civilian areas. Michael remarked on the dire conditions, stating that “many people spend a significant amount of time in air raid shelters,” and warned that Israel, being a small country, might struggle with the continuing asymmetric threat.

As tensions rise, the situation remains fluid. The IDF has reiterated warnings for civilians to evacuate from areas heavily influenced by Hezbollah, particularly in the Dahiyeh region. The ongoing fighting appears concentrated around the town of Qiyam near the Lebanese-Israeli border, where Hezbollah anticipates a possible Israeli ground invasion.

While Israel aims to control territory in southern Lebanon to secure its borders, the ramifications of escalating military actions continue to unfold, leaving local populations in precarious circumstances.
