Brawl Erupts in Mississippi High School Football Championship
A championship football game between private high schools in Mississippi escalated into a brawl following a contentious play. It all started when a quarterback was pushed to the ground by a coach from the opposing team.
This unfortunate incident took place during the second quarter of the Class 4A-D3 Mid-South Association of Independent Schools title game, featuring Lamar School and Brookhaven Academy, on Saturday night at Robinson Hale Stadium, located at the University of Mississippi.
After a successful first down, Lamar quarterback Sullivan Reed made a run up the left side and headed toward the Brookhaven sideline.
As Reed stepped out of bounds, he inadvertently ran between two assistant coaches from Brookhaven. One of them, reaching out, pushed Reed’s shoulder, causing him to collide with a steel bench.
Quick on his feet, Reed stood up and hurled the football back toward the Brookhaven coach. However, the ball missed and struck a Brookhaven player instead, igniting a ruckus on the sidelines that led to one coach throwing a punch.
Following this chaotic sequence, Reed was ejected from the game. The coach who made the initial push was charged with unsportsmanlike conduct, yet surprisingly, he stayed on the sidelines for the remainder of the game.
In a twist of fate, Lamar managed to secure victory without their starting quarterback, ultimately defeating Brookhaven 34-17. This win marked the seventh state title for Lamar and their first since 2018.
Neither MAIS nor Brookhaven has issued any statements regarding the altercation, but it’s likely that the coaching staff is bracing for consequences that could go beyond just a 15-yard penalty.
