The Virginia high school football team coached by Travis Turner suffered a loss in the state semifinals late Saturday night during a tumultuous time following his disappearance amid a child sex crimes investigation.
The Big Stone Gap Union High School Bears were edged out by Glenvar with a score of 21-20, eliminating them from the state championship contention. Interestingly, the Bears concluded their season with an impressive 13-0 record before this semifinal defeat, as reported by WJHL.
After Turner’s disappearance, the team managed to clinch the district championship just days later, which showcased their resilience in the face of adversity.
Turner went missing on November 20 while en route to his home in Appalachia, where he was to be questioned regarding suspicions of child sex crimes. Soon after, he was charged with possession of child pornography and solicitation of a minor.
His legal representative mentioned that the last sighting of him was in the woods, carrying a gun, though his family disputes the allegations against him. As of now, Turner has been unaccounted for for more than two weeks.
Before the incident occurred, Turner was well-respected within the community, where high school football remains a significant part of local culture. Fans expressed admiration for how the players remained focused, despite the overwhelming media attention.
“I mean, players, it’s hard for them not to hear a lot,” one supporter reflected after the game. “For them to stay focused, I think that says a lot about them and the community.”
In the interim, Jason Edwards took over coaching responsibilities. He reflected on the memorable season, saying, “I get to tell my kids and grandkids about this.” He also reminded others to “cherish the moment and always cherish it.”
