Search for Missing Hiker Amidst Grand Canyon Wildfire

A hiker from New Jersey has been missing in Arizona’s Grand Canyon National Park for over a week, coinciding with a significant wildfire that has spread across more than 123,000 acres.

Thomas Daniel Gibbs, 35, last communicated with friends and family around noon on July 22, and was officially reported missing six days later, according to the National Park Service.

Gibbs, originally from Freehold, is believed to have started his hike on the Grandview Trail and Horse Shore Mesa on the day he went silent.

An official from the National Park Service mentioned that search teams launched a comprehensive effort focused on the Grand View Trail.

As they searched, the Dragon Bravo Megafire burned through 123,434 acres along the Canyon’s Northern Rim, being only 13% contained by Tuesday, per the latest updates.

According to NPS officials, around 70 structures were destroyed by the fire fueled by lightning.

Despite the difficult conditions, officials confirmed that the wildfire “did not hinder the search effort” for Gibbs, allowing responders to conduct a thorough search of the area.

Collaborative efforts among Grand Canyon National Park responders and Coconino County search and rescue teams were noted, though no signs of Gibbs were found. The search was scaled back over the weekend due to the absence of further clues regarding his presence in the Grandview Trail area.

The fire, which began on July 4, has been exacerbated by hot and dry weather, along with strong winds. The U.S. Forest Service labeled it a “mega fire” on July 31 when it surpassed 100,000 acres.

This fire is now documented as the largest wildfire in the U.S. and ranks among the top ten largest in recorded Arizona history. Interestingly, if one were to drive around it, the route would stretch from New York City to Washington, D.C.
