Spring Break Hike Turns into Rescue Mission in Utah

A family’s fun outing during spring break in a remote part of Utah turned serious when a parent fell from a towering cliff, leaving responders racing against the clock to reach the injured individual, who sustained severe injuries in the rugged landscape.

This incident unfolded on Friday in the Pritchett Canyon area near Moab. After parking their off-road vehicle, the family, made up of four members, set off to explore a nearby rock arch, according to Grand County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue.

While hiking, the family split up. One parent and child moved ahead, walking at a faster pace than the others. Tragically, that adult ended up too close to the edge and fell, rescuers reported.

Interestingly, no one actually saw the fall itself. But one of the children heard the screams and quickly dashed down the trail to inform the other parent that something was wrong, said the sheriff’s search and rescue team.

Rescuers noted the hiker’s injuries were serious—perhaps open fractures and potential internal damage. The individual had to be placed on a rescue stretcher for safe extraction.

The other adult in the party was resourceful enough to use their iPhone’s satellite feature to call for help, which is impressive. They even managed to text 911. A helicopter soon responded, landing about 150 meters from where the hiker lay within five minutes, rescuers said.

Officials described the hiker as being “trapped in a sloping sandstone gorge,” complicating the rescue. The fall was estimated to be between 70 and 80 feet, followed by a 50-foot bounce over slick rocks, making the extraction challenging and requiring a significant amount of manpower.

The rescue operation, as described by those on the scene, utilized a range of equipment—ropes, carabiners, anchor bolts, and other tools. It was not easy, taking about three hours to complete.

Ultimately, the injured hiker was airlifted to a hospital in critical condition, though their current status remains unknown. The sheriff’s team highlighted that no one had witnessed the fall and remarked on the deceptive nature of cliff edges in Moab, where gentle slopes can suddenly lead to vertical drops. Various factors contributed to the accident, but it’s unclear what specifically could have been done to prevent it.

In the wake of this incident, responders urged everyone exploring the Moab wilderness to exercise caution. It’s a reminder that while outdoors can be exhilarating, it definitely has its risks. Responders wished the family well, hoping for a positive outcome in the future.
