Democrats often accuse Republicans of authoritarianism, while critics say Democrats have worked with major technology companies to limit speech, promote vaccine requirements, and treat some political views as threats. Sara Gonzales describes those accusations as “projection.”
She argues that claims portraying Donald Trump as a fascist or as “literally Hitler” are unsupported, and says Democrats are the ones who have used government power against political opponents.
Gonzales points to Hillary Clinton, who has spent years warning that Trump might use the justice system to target his critics. “If that were true, she’d be in jail,” Gonzales says, arguing that Clinton’s freedom shows the justice system has not been used against her in the way she describes.
Clinton recently made a case for compelling Elon Musk to testify before Congress if Democrats regain control. On the “Pivot” podcast, she said a presidential pardon would not prevent Congress from issuing a subpoena. She also suggested that a pardon could leave Musk unable to invoke the Fifth Amendment, since he would no longer face legal jeopardy.
Gonzales called the argument ironic, citing Anthony Fauci’s testimony before a Senate committee. Fauci, who had received a broad, preemptive pardon from President Biden, invoked the Fifth Amendment more than 100 times when questioned about COVID-19’s origins and related issues.
Gonzales also referred to Senator Rand Paul’s comments during the hearing. Paul told Fauci that obstructing a congressional investigation was unlawful and warned there could be consequences for refusing to answer questions.
Gonzales said Clinton should apply her stated principles consistently and support efforts to get answers from Fauci, adding sarcastically that he should face jail if he refuses to testify.
