NYPD officers will be stationed on every night subway train for the next six months under Gov. Kathy Hochul's new plan to combat rising transit violence.
Hochul revealed the surge in Metro police during his State of the State address in Albany on Tuesday, saying the state would crack down.
“We want uniformed police officers on platforms, but more importantly, we want police officers on every train at night (9pm to 5am) for the next six months. The state will financially support these efforts,” she said. .
The spike is likely a mixed message from Hochul, who had been calling for improved subway safety as recently as December 23, the day after a straphanger was set on fire and killed while sleeping on a Brooklyn train.
In his State of the Union address, Hochul also said he would direct the MTA to install platform fencing at 100 more subway stations. She said bright LED lighting would be installed at all stations by the end of this year.
This is a developing story. Check back for more updates.
