A youth hockey team’s journey turned tragic on Thursday when a snowplow collided with their van in Colorado, resulting in the death of a player’s father and injuries to several young players and adults.
The Santa Clarita Lady Flyers, a girls’ ice hockey team with players aged 12 and under from the Santa Clarita Valley, was en route to a tournament near Denver when the accident occurred on Interstate 70 in Clear Creek County.
Authorities confirmed that the deceased was the van’s driver and the father of one of the young athletes. He was declared dead at the scene.
The hockey club shared on Instagram, “Our 12AA Lady Flyers were heading to Denver, Colorado to participate in WGHL weekend. We ask that you please keep our hockey family in your prayers and allow us time to understand the details of this tragic event.”
Reports indicate that eight of the ten individuals in the van sustained injuries. Among them were multiple young players, with one requiring airlift to a trauma center in critical condition, while others were transported by ambulance to nearby hospitals.
