Homeowner fights knife-wielding, would-be burglar who escapes with stunt right out of ‘Batman’

A homeowner in Tacoma, Washington, was woken up just before midnight earlier this month by a loud bang that seemed to be coming from his roof. KCPQ-TV reported..

The homeowner went to see what was going on and saw someone trying to break into the home from a fourth-floor balcony, police said.

Then things got really strange.

The homeowner confronted the intruder and a fight began, KCPQ reported. The homeowner punched the suspect multiple times and the suspect attacked the homeowner with a knife, the station reported, adding that the homeowner was not seriously injured.

According to police, the suspect was in possession of two knives and possibly scissors.

Then things got really weird and some Batman-esque stunts ensued.

KCPQ said the suspect jumped from a fourth-floor balcony and landed on a third-floor balcony, from which he jumped to the ground.

The suspect then fled, got into a vehicle and drove off, according to KCPQ.

The homeowner got in his vehicle and followed the suspect until he lost sight of him, but the victim returned home and called 911, according to the sheriff’s office.

The homeowner told officers who responded to the scene that he did not know the suspect, KCPQ reported.

Further information from the station:

After detectives released a Crime Prevention Society bulletin about the case, the suspect’s family identified him to police. The family said he had just been released from the hospital and did not know where he was. They also told detectives he suffers from bipolar disorder and his mental health was deteriorating.

Police arrested the suspect on Sunday and took him into custody without incident, KCPQ said, adding that the attempted theft happened on May 12.

The suspect was identified as 33-year-old Adam Groetsch, the department said in a release, adding that he was being held in the Pierce County Jail on suspicion of attempted first-degree robbery and second-degree assault, with bail set at $75,000. Groetsch was still in jail Friday afternoon, jail records show. show.
