Honduran Attorney General Seeks Arrest of Former President Hernández

The attorney general of Honduras is pursuing the arrest of former President Juan Orlando Hernández, who was recently pardoned by Donald Trump. Joher Antonio Zelaya Álvarez, the attorney general, announced on Monday that he has requested Interpol to direct Honduran authorities to act on a 2023 arrest order against Hernández, who faces allegations of fraud and money laundering. Hernández was released from a U.S. federal prison just a week ago, after serving time for his role in trafficking large amounts of cocaine to the U.S.

“We are struggling against the pervasive corruption and criminal networks that have become entrenched in our nation,” Zelaya stated, sharing a translation of his comments on social media.

He also included a photo of a two-year-old order from a Honduran Supreme Court judge, which specifies that the order should be enforced “if the defendant is released by U.S. authorities.”

The Associated Press reported on an ongoing scandal involving numerous Honduran officials and politicians, known as the Pandora affair. Prosecutors allege that government funding was misused through various non-governmental organizations, ultimately benefiting Hernández’s political campaigns.

After stepping down from office in 2022, Hernández was the target of an extradition request from the U.S. by a supposed ally in the fight against drug trafficking. Current President Xiomara Castro, of the Social Democratic Liberal Party, facilitated his arrest and extradition.

Hernández’s attorney, Renato Stabile, claimed this legal move is politically motivated, labeling it as an attempt by the opposition Libre party to undermine Hernández. Stabile described the allegations as “baseless” and characterizes the political landscape as desperate.

Hernández had been convicted in New York for conspiracy to import over 400 tons of cocaine and was sentenced to 45 years in prison before being pardoned by Trump.

Trump has asserted that Hernández faced unfair treatment, insinuating that his prosecution was politically charged. Following a brief trial, Hernández was convicted of drug trafficking and related offenses.

Hernández, in his defense, has professed to be a key player in the anti-drug trafficking efforts and claimed cooperation with U.S. officials across three presidential administrations. However, the evidence presented during the trial painted a different picture, suggesting he used his position to protect drug operations.

After being pardoned, Hernández expressed gratitude to Trump, claiming he had been wrongfully convicted. He noted, on social media, that Trump’s decision had significantly impacted his life.

“A heartfelt thank you to President @realDonaldTrump for your courage to stand up for what’s right when the system is manipulated. You acknowledged the facts and acted decisively. You’ve changed my life, and I’ll always remember that,” he wrote.
