Tommy Vietor, a former spokesman for Obama and co-host of “Pod Save America,” expressed a desire for a significant shift in how military support for Israel is viewed. He highlighted the “evil acts of terror” committed by Hamas against Israel but also mentioned that Israel has, in his view, dehumanized Gaza residents. This perspective led him to suggest that Democratic presidential candidates should advocate for ending federal aid to Israel.
Vietor stated, “What I want to see from at least the Democrats is to stop military aid to Israel. They’re a wealthy country; they don’t need $3 billion each year.” He acknowledged that former President Obama had backed assistance to Israel during his presidency but urged for a reevaluation of that commitment.
“We need to address officials in the Israeli government who use language about genocide and ethnic cleansing. It’s crucial to support ceasefire resolutions at the UN and to ensure that international media is present in Gaza to report independently,” he elaborated.
Vietor pointed out that after the recent conflict, there shouldn’t be a return to the previous status quo as of October 7. He believes that the current political approach, particularly the Biden administration’s support for Netanyahu, needs to change significantly.
Similarly, John Lovett, another former speechwriter for Obama, echoed the sentiment that Democrats must push Israel more forcefully. John Favreau, another aide, mentioned that the military aid to Israel is just the “bare minimum” the U.S. can offer in light of its actions.
Despite some Democratic lawmakers already criticizing Israel’s military operations during the ongoing conflict with Hamas, Vietor and Lovett argue that greater pressure on Israel is necessary. They pointed out that members of the House Progressive Caucus, including prominent figures like Ilhan Omar, have condemned Israeli actions and described them as akin to war crimes.
