House and Senate Democrats invite Epstein survivors to Trump's State of the Union address

Democrats Invite Epstein Survivors to State of the Union Address

On Tuesday, House and Senate Democrats extended invitations to survivors of Jeffrey Epstein’s sex-trafficking crimes to attend Donald Trump’s State of the Union address. They also emphasized the need for greater “transparency” regarding Epstein-related documents, despite Trump previously signing the Epstein File Transparency Act, which mandates the Justice Department to disclose all unclassified files related to Epstein.

Additionally, it has been reported that some Democratic lawmakers intend to invite undocumented immigrants as guests to their addresses. This has raised concerns from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

“Once again, they are prioritizing illegal aliens over the safety of Americans. Just yesterday, our agents arrested individuals including pedophiles and rapists. President Trump and Secretary Noem have made it clear: if you enter our country illegally, we will find you, arrest you, and you won’t return,” DHS stated.

Among those invited is Marcelo Gómez da Silva, a Brazilian national who was briefly in ICE detention last year after his student visa expired. He was released on bail after a judge deemed him not a threat to the community, though his asylum case is still unresolved.

Another guest, Caroline Díaz Goncalves, is also from Brazil and a DACA recipient whose illegal status was revealed following a traffic stop. Though she wasn’t immediately detained, she was later apprehended by ICE after another encounter.

DHS pointed out that her visa had expired over a decade ago, and thus, she is subject to deportation. Despite this, Gonsalves has been receiving financial assistance from the University of Utah.

Democrats’ decisions to invite these individuals seem to be a strategic push against the Republican administration’s strict immigration stance. They want to showcase real stories to foster empathy around the immigration debate.

Furthermore, inviting Epstein’s victims and possibly their relatives serves to pressure the Trump Justice Department. While some documents have been released, many remain redacted or withheld, prompting calls for more decisive action from the department.

Democratic Women’s Caucus members plan to wear white during the address to show support for Epstein’s survivors. As Rep. Jill Tokuda (D-Hawaii) put it, “When Donald Trump looks into the chamber tonight, he will see white walls. We are here to remind him that justice and transparency are not optional—they are required.”

This initiative has been led by prominent Democrats and the architects of the Epstein File Transparency Act, signed into law by Trump in late 2025, which ordered the Justice Department to release all related documents.

Member of Parliament Invited Guests Background
Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) & Rep. Suhas Subramanyam (D-VA) Sky and Amanda Roberts Relatives of Virginia Roberts Giuffre, a significant figure in the Epstein scandal who died by suicide.
Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) Hayley Robson Survivor and advocate from the Epstein case.
Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) Dani Bensky A survivor and former ballerina seeking full disclosure of her files.
Rep. Robert Garcia (D-CA) Annie Farmer One of the initial witnesses against Ghislaine Maxwell.
Rep. James Walkinshaw (D-VA) Jess Michaels Survivor and founder of a sexual assault safety initiative.

These invitations also come amid ongoing tensions between Congress and the Justice Department led by Attorney General Pam Bondi. While over 3 million pages of Epstein-related documents have been released, many Democrats argue that substantial information remains hidden or improperly redacted.

“The Trump administration is thwarting our calls for justice at every turn,” Rep. Subrahmanyam stated. “We honor the family of Virginia Roberts Giuffre as a reminder that we will not back down.”

The White House has defended the Justice Department’s actions, asserting compliance with the Epstein Act but mentioning that some redactions are crucial for protecting the investigation and individual privacy.

This State of the Union is occurring amidst several political challenges.

  • Government Shutdown: The DHS continues to partially shut down while Democrats seek significant reforms in immigration policies.
  • Customs Dispute: The address responds to the Supreme Court’s decision regarding President Trump’s tariffs, although the President can still impose tariffs through other legal routes.
  • Political Landscape: As the midterm elections near, both parties are strategically curating guest lists to shape campaign narratives.

Trump is set to deliver his address at 9 p.m. ET.
