House Democrats Criticize U.S. Policies at Mexico City Meeting
Over the weekend, several House Democrats, particularly members of the “Squad,” voiced their criticisms of U.S. influence and policy during a meeting in Mexico City. One lawmaker expressed that she felt prouder of her Guatemalan roots than her American identity.
The event, known as the second annual Panamerican Congress, gathered left-wing figures from both North and South America. Participants included well-known Democrats like Ilhan Omar from Minnesota, Rashida Tlaib from Michigan, Ayanna Pressley from Massachusetts, Summer Lee from Pennsylvania, as well as Delia Ramirez and Jess Gilbert Garcia from Illinois.
All attendees are members of the Progressive Caucus.

Delia Ramirez spoke during a press conference alongside immigration experts and DACA recipients, declaring her pride in being Guatemalan before American. This sentiment was expressed in Spanish as part of her remarks at the conference’s opening.
Ramirez, whose ancestors faced challenges of their own, criticized the Trump administration’s approach to illegal immigration. Lawmakers in attendance denounced what they see as U.S. priorities centered on “imperialism, militarization, conquest, and domination.”
On her website, Ramirez highlighted her unique position as the only member of Congress in a mixed-status marriage and emphasized her commitment to advocating for comprehensive immigration reform for individuals like her husband, who is undocumented.
The White House responded sharply to the Democrats’ comments. Spokesperson Liz Houston described their remarks as “sleazy,” arguing that they reflect a refusal to prioritize the safety of Americans. In contrast, she asserted that President Trump is actively pursuing peace initiatives and addressing illegal immigration.
“War Crime Netanyahu”: Members of the “Squad” Speak Against Israel’s Actions
At the summit, discussions extended beyond immigration, touching on the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. Colombia’s Deputy Minister of Multilateral Business, Mauricio Jaramiro Jasil, praised Tlaib for her advocacy, calling her a “symbol of resistance,” which prompted a standing ovation from the audience.
The gathering was organized by leaders of Progressive International, a group that characterizes capitalism as a “virus” that needs to be eradicated. This organization collaborated with Mexico’s ruling leftist party, Morena.
Mexican Senator Gerald Fernandez Noronya condemned the treatment of American immigrants during the Trump administration, calling it an unfair persecution based on skin color and nationality. He pointed out the harsh conditions faced by immigrants in detention centers.
In a pre-event interview, David Adler, the general coordinator at Progressive International, mentioned that the summit aimed to shift influence from Washington, D.C. to developing nations in light of authoritarian threats.
Progressive International described the United States as a central force of imperial violence, highlighting military presence abroad and extensive military funding. Their position underscored that U.S. militarism contributes to global political instability, calling for an end to it to save lives.
