On Tuesday’s “CNN NewsNight” broadcast, House Minority Leader Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) said the “very strong “A lot of our people think that our Republican colleagues… don’t really want to address this issue. They just want to participate in a political stunt, or they don’t want to do anything at the border in November.” They just don’t want to solve the problem in order to use immigration as a weapon.”
“This is a deeply disturbing decision by ultra-conservatives on the Supreme Court,” Jeffries said. “It’s clear that our immigration system is broken. We know that, and we are committed to addressing the challenges at our border. We recognize that we need to address these issues in a clear and comprehensive way, consistent with our values as a nation of immigrants and a nation founded on the rule of law. We need strong, secure, humane borders. What we’re seeing from many of our Republican colleagues is that they want to address this challenge. It’s that they don’t want to actually address the problem. They just want to participate in a political stunt to weaponize the border and immigration issues in November, or they just don’t want to solve the problem. I think they’ll reject it, but it’s very unfortunate what the Supreme Court has done in this particular case.”
he added, “[A]House Democrats, we are ready, willing and able to find bipartisan common ground with our Republican colleagues on all issues, including fixing our broken immigration system and addressing challenges at the border. We have shown that this is possible. President Biden has made clear that he wants to work together to find bipartisan solutions to the challenges we face at the border. The big challenge, of course, is that many Republicans don’t want to address this issue. They want to politically weaponize this issue. That is the height of irresponsibility. ”
