Houston fights back for a win against UCF in front of a disappointingly small home audience

Houston Cougars Struggle with Attendance Despite Ranking

Being ranked in the top-25 usually draws a crowd, but that hasn’t been the case for the Houston Cougars lately. Even the introduction of special space-themed helmets couldn’t entice fans to fill the stands when the UCF Knights visited over the weekend.

Coming into the match with a 3-1 record and sitting at No. 20, the Cougars were set to confront a UCF team that had just secured a good win against TCU. And yet, even with the added excitement of those helmets, fans weren’t swayed. TDECU Stadium was almost deserted, so much so that one could almost picture a tumbleweed rolling through the empty end zones.

The attendance issue is certainly noticeable, especially since both Houston and Orlando share significant connections to the U.S. space program. It’s a shame because UCF has been showcasing their brand for years, which is undeniably admirable. Still, it’s clear that fans weren’t ready to part with their money for this matchup.

In the game itself, UCF dominated the first half, taking a 10-0 lead into the locker room, largely due to Houston fumbling a few opportunities in the red zone. They managed to score again in the third quarter, extending their lead. However, everything began to shift when Houston found their rhythm on the ground.

Quarterback Conner Weigman emerged with an impressive second half, scoring three rushing touchdowns. This surge led the Cougars to tally 21 straight points and ultimately clinch a 24-17 victory over UCF. It was a much-needed win that bumps Houston to 1-1 in conference play, keeping their hopes for a successful season in the Big 12 alive.

Looking ahead, the Cougars are set to travel to take on Kansas State next week. If they perform well there, perhaps more fans will show up when Oklahoma State rolls into town the following week.
