Houthis Increase Attacks on Israel, Even with U.S. Ceasefire and Iran Discussions

Escalation of Houthi Attacks on Israel

In recent days, Iran-backed Houthi rebels have increased their attacks on Israel, launching three ballistic missiles within just four days. All missiles were intercepted by Israel’s defense systems, but the frequency of these attacks marks a significant escalation.

Interestingly, this surge in attacks occurred despite a ceasefire between the Houthis and the US. Ongoing discussions between the US and Iran about potential nuclear agreements continue, while Israel has retaliated with strikes on Yemen’s Hodeida Port and Sanaa Airport.

The Houthis appear to be accelerating their activities in response to Israel’s renewed strikes against Hamas in Gaza, especially since they refrained from firing during an earlier temporary ceasefire in Gaza this year.

Historically, when a ceasefire was established between Israel and Hamas in January 2025, the Houthis began launching missiles. By that time, they had fired over 40 ballistic missiles, along with numerous drones and cruise missiles towards Israel. This led to casualties in Tel Aviv by July, prompting Israel’s initial military response in Yemen.

Since March 18, following the Israel Defense Forces’ renewed operations against Hamas in Gaza, the Yemen-based Houthis have launched 39 ballistic missiles and at least 10 drones at Israel. Some of these missiles are reported to be short-range.

It remains uncertain how long the Houthis can sustain this level of aggression, especially as Israeli and previous US strikes may have disrupted their ability to import replacement missiles. Additionally, it’s unclear how Israel might respond moving forward.

Both President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have pointed to Iran as the primary instigator behind Houthi attacks. This situation could potentially provide Israel with justification for an offensive against Iran. However, such action risks derailing ongoing diplomatic efforts between the US and Iran, which have struggled to progress largely due to Iran’s refusal to halt its uranium enrichment activities.
