How the message from Charlie Kirk's murder bullet casing connects to the 'furry' subculture and online trolls

The inscription found on the bullet casing that killed Charlie Kirk is linked to trolling and “furry” communities online.

The phrase “What is this?” appears on the casing, according to an arrest document related to Tyler Robinson, a 22-year-old student from Utah.

Experts in digital culture note that this phrase is often used in trolling contexts, particularly among online role-playing groups related to furry interests.

Jamie Cohen, an associate professor of media studies, pointed out a meme called “Notices Buldge,” which shows two men—one wearing cat ears—suggesting a form of catfishing.

There may be a joke involved, perhaps about them both pretending otherwise, Cohen mentioned.

The phrase references a part of the meme, indicating a scam that uncovers an unexpected surprise.

Additionally, “Owo” is an emoji often representing cute animals with big eyes and small noses.

Another digital culture expert, Alex Turby, mentioned that the phrases could resemble “copypasta,” which is text designed to be shared widely.

He explained, “It’s about showing you know Internet culture,” emphasizing it carries a kind of humor that reflects one’s identity online.

Turby noted that “OWO” is prevalent among participants in role-playing and furry communities.

Other found inscriptions on additional casings, believed to be linked to Robinson, included messages like “Heyfascist! Catch!” which the New York Times associates with the game “Helldivers 2.”

Another casing featured the phrase, “If you read this, you’re a gay LMAO,” along with “Bellachào,” which ties back to anti-fascist movements in Italy during World War II.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox remarked on the inscriptions, particularly the “Heyfascist! Catch!” saying the phrase is quite revealing. He suggested it speaks for itself.

Turby expressed that these messages indicate Robinson’s extensive online presence.

They reveal a person deeply immersed in online communities, someone very connected.

Cohen also indicated that the meaning of these messages might be ambiguous—they could signify a lot or very little.

Regardless, it shows he is clearly part of the “very online” world.

Kirk, 31, was tragically shot while speaking outside at Utah Valley University, leaving behind a widow and two children.

Robinson was apprehended more than a day later after a shooting that sent ripples across the nation, particularly in light of increasing condemnation of political violence.

Authorities reported that Robinson harbored strong animosity toward Kirk and expressed hatred for him and his family.
