HUD Investigates Boston’s Housing Practices
The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced on Thursday that it’s looking into the city of Boston over allegations regarding its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) housing policies, claiming they potentially breach federal antidiscrimination laws.
According to HUD, there are indications that Boston may have improperly used federal grant funds to implement what they describe as “race-based preferences,” which would be a violation of the Fair Housing Act and Title VI. They characterized this initiative as a kind of “social engineering project.”
HUD Secretary Scott Turner expressed concerns, stating, “We believe the City of Boston is engaged in a social engineering project that intentionally promotes discriminatory housing policies based on ideological commitment to DEI, rather than merit or necessity.” He stressed that HUD is committed to ensuring the civil rights of all Americans and will conduct a detailed investigation into Boston’s declared aim of “integrating racial equity into all levels of city government.”
Turner continued, saying, “This distorted thinking will be fully exposed, and Boston will comply with federal anti-discrimination laws.”
Previously, HUD had sent a letter to Boston’s Mayor’s Office of Housing, raising alarms about concerns they have regarding the improper use of federal resources.
HUD pointed out that Boston’s Office of Fair Housing Assessment has targeted “Black and Latino families” for “homebuyer assistance” and requires city agencies to gather racial and ethnic data to assess their initiatives from a racial equity and social justice angle.
Moreover, HUD highlighted that Boston’s 2025 Housing Strategy asserts that at least 65% of homeownership initiatives should be directed toward BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) households.
“The policy is clear,” noted HUD, clarifying that housing financial aid is not just for all low-income individuals but is “particularly for BIPOC residents.” Turner also mentioned during a recent interview that HUD is “smashing Biden’s Boston BIPOC bash,” criticizing the city’s housing policies as discriminatory under the guise of DEI.
He further laid blame on the Biden administration for an immigration and refugee crisis that he claims has adversely affected the housing market.
In an annual report, HUD typically evaluates the housing market situation for low-income Americans, noting the ongoing struggles related to affordability and the lack of adequate housing options. This year, Turner remarked on troubling findings, particularly linked to the former president’s immigration policies.
Turner addressed the issues stating, “The unchecked illegal immigration and open border policies that the Biden administration has tolerated continue to place significant burdens on housing and squeeze affordability for American families.”
