Huge majority of Democrats say Biden must step aside even as Biden-Trump horse race is tied: poll

A majority of Americans, including a majority of President Biden’s own supporters, want him out of the presidential race, according to an ABC News/Washington Post poll conducted Thursday.

Sixty-seven percent of respondents said Biden should drop out of the race and 85% said he is too old to serve a second term, while 60% said former President Trump is too old to serve a second term, up from 44% in the spring of 2023.

Among Democrats and voters who identify as Democratic leaning, 62% say Biden should drop out of the race, and even among self-described Biden supporters, 54% say Biden should drop out of the race.

Nevertheless, the poll found that despite voters’ lack of confidence in Biden, Biden and Trump were effectively tied, with 46% saying they would vote for the incumbent president and 47% saying they would support Trump.

Biden has vowed to continue campaigning amid growing concerns and calls for him to withdraw from the race and allow another candidate to take on Trump.

“There’s a lot of speculation about what Joe’s going to do? Is he going to stay in the race? Is he going to drop out? What’s he going to do?,” Biden said Friday during a speech in Madison, Wisconsin. “My answer is this: I’m going to run and I’m going to win again.”
