UN Official Advocates for Reparations to Combat Systemic Racism

A senior official from the United Nations has declared that reparations are crucial in the fight against systemic racism. Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, made these remarks during the fifth session of the UN Permanent Forum on People of African Descent, highlighting initiatives from around the globe.

In his address, Türk commended numerous efforts, mentioning “anti-discrimination laws, the establishment of independent human rights and equality frameworks, and the ongoing pursuit of reparations.”

He underscored the “everyday discrimination” faced by individuals of African descent in various settings, such as workplaces and schools, attributing these injustices to the ongoing impacts of colonialism and slavery. He stressed the persistence of “racist and dehumanizing rhetoric,” urging nations to adopt stronger anti-racist laws and policies to foster more inclusive communities. Türk also encouraged young people of African descent and civil society members to engage actively in the decision-making processes, maintaining the momentum towards reparative justice.

These comments followed the UN’s adoption of a resolution that labeled the transatlantic slave trade as a grave crime against humanity, urging countries to pursue reparations to rectify historical injustices.

The topic of reparations is gaining traction in the United States, where initiatives are popping up from coast to coast. For instance, Evanston, Illinois, became the first local government to pass a reparations plan, allocating $25,000 in cash to local residents aimed at addressing past racial discrimination in housing.

Nearby, Chicago’s Mayor Brandon Johnson has introduced a community engagement initiative called “Repair Chicago,” designed to gather the stories of Black residents as he prepares to implement some form of reparations. At the state level, an Illinois commission is deliberating over reparations for Black individuals following a report detailing the state’s history of harm toward them.

However, while these efforts indicate a move towards compensation, numerous programs are stumbling due to financial and legal challenges.
