Hunter Biden Defends Maine Senate Candidate Graham Platner
In a podcast interview on Friday, Hunter Biden publicly supported Graham Platner, the Democratic candidate for the Senate from Maine, brushing aside controversy surrounding Platner’s Nazi tattoo and explicit messaging. Biden stated, “I’m 99.9% sure that Graham Platner is not a Nazi, and I don’t think he’s a racist in any way.”
During the conversation with California Governor Gavin Newsom, Biden highlighted the intense scrutiny faced by politicians, suggesting that few would survive if their private communications were made public. He expressed, “I haven’t heard anything that would tell me that he is a person who is abusive, misogynistic, anti-Semitic, or racist.”
Platner recently won the Democratic primary and is set to challenge Republican Senator Susan Collins in the upcoming election. He has been criticized for allegations of sexting multiple women while married and for a tattoo that resembles a Nazi symbol.
Biden also reflected on his own experiences with public scrutiny, especially regarding his past crack addiction, emphasizing that most public figures would be similarly affected by such revelations. “I always tell people, ‘Show me your phone. Give me access to your iCloud. Let’s go through it and remove as much inappropriate and outrageous stuff as possible,’” he said.
Platner explained that he got the controversial tattoo during a drunken night in Croatia over a decade ago. The design, a skull and crossbones, is associated with a Nazi symbol. He acknowledged he was unaware of its implications at the time, stating, “Years ago, I got a skull and crossbones tattoo with some fellow Marines. I was appalled to find out it closely resembled a Nazi symbol.”
Additionally, in light of his explicit messaging scandal, Biden noted the consensual nature of Platner’s communications and remarked, “I think his relationship with his wife is his relationship with his wife.” He described the leaked texts as somewhat trivial, indicating that the focus should remain on more significant issues.
Though Biden defended Platner amid these allegations, it remains to be seen how this will impact the candidate’s campaign as he aims to steer the conversation toward the issues that matter most to voters.
Platner, for his part, has admitted to the existence of those texts and expressed his remorse, stating that he has learned from the experience and prioritizes what truly matters to the constituents he hopes to serve.
