Hurricane Melissa Approaches Cuba

Hurricane Melissa, which was initially classified as a Category 5 storm, has weakened to a Category 3. However, it’s still expected to bring severe rain and strong winds to Cuba as it continues its destructive path.

Set to impact Cuba around 11 PM ET, the storm is projected to deliver between 20 to 30 inches of rain, with winds reaching 130 to 140 mph and storm surges of up to 12 feet.

Meanwhile, Jamaica continues to feel the effects of the hurricane. Approximately 15,000 individuals are in emergency shelters, and over half a million people are without power.

Notably, Hurricane Melissa is being referred to as “the storm of the century” and is anticipated to set records as the most powerful hurricane to ever hit Jamaica. It could cause significant devastation, affecting over 25 million people across Jamaica, Cuba, and Haiti.

Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness expressed concerns about the nation’s readiness for such a powerful storm, admitting that the infrastructure may not withstand its fury. He urged the public to pray that the storm does not make direct landfall.

“I urge all Jamaicans and friendly well-wishers of Jamaica to continue to pray that this hurricane does not hit us directly,” Holness stated.

As a precaution, Jamaica has closed its two main airports. The Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston advised passengers to contact airlines for rebooking rather than going to the airport.

Authorities have issued immediate evacuation orders for vulnerable areas, urging residents in low-lying locations to seek safety. The government has opened over 650 shelters to accommodate those in need.

In Cuba, nearly 120,000 people have been evacuated from Santiago de Cuba, according to President Miguel Diaz-Canel.

This is an evolving story that will continue to be updated.
