Police said the husband, wife and three children were asleep when an intruder broke a window and entered the home at Fort Spain, Alabama, around 12:15am on Saturday.
“The homeowner woke up to his wife. He believed he heard someone enter the house,” said John Barber, the chief of the Spanish Fort Police. He told Wala-TV. Spanish Fort is about 15 minutes southeast of Mobile.
“The homeowner has taken what we believe is a reasonable step towards protecting himself and his family.”
Barber added to the station and the homeowner immediately called the 911 after the homeowner fired a shot and hit an intruder on the upper abdomen.
The intruder was found to be a 17-year-old man, Wala added.
“Our officers were able to apply chest seals to individuals suffering from gunshot wounds,” the chief explained to the station. “It was a pretty scar. He was airlifted to a university hospital. At this point, I believe he is critical, but it's stable.”
Barber told Wala that the teenager looked broken through one of the front windows of Casson Trace's house. He added to the station that the teenagers and the homeowners don't know each other and the incident appears to be random.
“Based on the original research, I believe that teens are under the influence of some substance. I don't know exactly… but I believe he is under the influence of something,” Barber told Walla. “Early that night he was in that street residence with some of his friends. He left the residence and entered this other residence.
The chief called the situation a “tragedy” for all involved, the station said.
“I was sleeping in their home with my husband and wife, my three children,” Barber told Wala. “Your home is your castle. Your wife wakes up to crush the glass. What a terrible situation. [is] Protect his home – doing what he did. ”
The station stated that your ground laws will allow individuals to use forces, including deadly forces, if they believe that fatal physical forces are being used or are about to be used against them in places legally permitted.
“In your residence, you don't have to retreat,” Barber told Wala. “The homeowner took what appears to be a reasonable step towards protecting himself and his family. This is ultimately presented to the big ju judge and confirms that this is true, but that's the first investigation.”
The chief noted the station, as investigators worked to determine the teenage charges, “I hope he will pull out.”
