I attended a GLP-1 retreat. Here’s what surprised me.

Updated July 20, 2026, 10:46 a.m. ET

  • GLP-1 medications like Ozempic and Wegovy have seen a surge in popularity for weight loss, with usage nearly quadrupling since 2024.
  • A wellness resort in South Carolina offers a retreat specifically for guests using or considering GLP-1 drugs.
  • It’s vital to maintain a healthy lifestyle, as many individuals tend to regain weight after stopping these medications.

HILTON HEAD, SC – In a casual classroom at Hilton Head Health Wellness Resort & Spa, I found myself with a few others, unaware that some might be using or considering GLP-1 drugs. There we were, participating in an introductory class on these increasingly sought-after medications.

Nearly 75% of Americans over 19 are classified as overweight, according to the National Center for Health Statistics from 2021 to 2023. This statistic includes just over 40% of adults considered obese.

For many struggling to shed pounds, GLP-1 medications often appear to be a beacon of hope. The compelling results seen with celebrities using medications like Wegovy or Zepbound, approved for weight loss, draw more attention. In contrast, Ozempic and Mounjaro mainly focus on diabetes management.

According to Gallup’s National Health and Well-Being Index, the use of GLP-1 drugs has skyrocketed, with around 11% of U.S. adults taking them for weight loss in 2026 compared to just 3% in 2024.

However, there are several crucial aspects to consider before starting, during use, and when contemplating discontinuation of these medications. Hilton Head Health emphasizes these points in a specialized retreat, which I had the opportunity to learn about.

What to Expect at a GLP-1 Retreat

This wellness resort, initially designed for weight loss nearly 50 years ago, has shifted towards a holistic health model. Yet, many guests still come in search of weight loss solutions, some of whom are already on GLP-1 medications like those in my class.

The staff at the resort neither pushes nor discourages the use of these drugs, leaving medical advice to healthcare professionals. Still, they provide information about how the medications work, including their associated pros and cons. “If they choose to go that route, we guide them on adhering to practices that maximize their chance of long-term success,” shared Bob Wright, a health educator at the resort.

Throughout specific weeks, the resort runs a GLP-1 Support program, beginning with the introductory class I attended, and adding activities such as:

  • Individual assessments of body composition and metabolism.
  • Biomarker testing related to inflammation and glucose management.
  • Workshops focused on nutrition, physical strength, and mental well-being.
  • Small group coaching and strength training sessions.
  • Cooking demonstrations led by chefs.
  • Luxury accommodations with gourmet dining.
  • Access to various facilities, including meditation, aqua boxing, and circuit training.

Key Considerations Regarding GLP-1s

According to Holly Toelke, the fitness manager at the resort, guests should experiment with different activities. “What if it turns out to be something you absolutely love?” she encourages. It’s crucial to prioritize strength training since muscle loss can be an adverse effect of GLP-1 medications, as noted by the Mayo Clinic. “A key component of losing weight is continuing to strengthen,” Toelke explained.

Other potential side effects of these medications can include gastrointestinal issues like stomach pain and nausea. Elizabeth Huggins, a registered dietitian at Hilton Head Health, advises guests to focus on nutritious, whole foods, especially if they’re feeling unwell. “Seek out quality foods that are easy to digest,” she noted.

Those who hope to discontinue GLP-1 medications must learn to eat mindfully and cultivate a healthy relationship with food. As Wright points out, the drugs suppress appetite at a biological level, so losing that control can lead to reemerging hunger. Pervasive thoughts about food might come back too.

Research shows many individuals regain weight after stopping GLP-1 medications. Others might not experience any weight loss or achieve their desired results. Anne Poirier, a Behavioral Health director at Hilton Head Health, stresses the importance of focusing on behavior over numbers on the scale, guiding participants to think about what their bodies do each day rather than appearance.

No matter the approach guests take regarding GLP-1 medications, Hilton Head Health aims to equip them with tools for lasting wellness.
