I Didn’t Put Hillary Clinton ‘in Jail,’ It Would’ve ‘Looked So Bad’

Former President Donald Trump told computer scientist and podcaster Rex Friedman that he doesn't want former first lady and secretary of state Hillary Clinton to go to “prison” because it would “look really bad” for the United States. “I thought it was a terrible thing to put the first lady in prison,” Trump said. “I want to keep the country together.”

“If you were to become a leader again, you would have unprecedented power. What does that power do to you, in your own personal psychology? Are you worried that it would distort your view of the world?” Fridman asked Trump in an interview on Tuesday. Rex Friedman's podcast.

“No, I don't think so,” Trump responded. “Look, I was there for four years. I could have dealt a major blow to Hillary Clinton. I thought it was a terrible thing to take the president's wife and put her in prison.”

“She's very lucky that I didn't have to do anything,” Trump continued. “Hillary is a lucky woman, because a lot of people got behind me. They wanted to see something.”

The 45th president added that sending the former first lady to prison would be extremely damaging to the country's reputation.

“I thought it looked too bad,” Trump said. “Think about it. The president of the United States [wife] We had a Secretary of State, right? She did. But you put the president's wife in jail?'

“But when I was released, they were telling these false stories,” Trump added. “They were telling these dishonest false stories, just like they did in the past with 'Russia, Russia, Russia.' That was false. 51 different agencies and agents were false. Everything was false.”

The former president went on to explain that his desire to unite the country is another reason he doesn't want Hillary Clinton to go to prison.

“I didn't want to put her in jail, and I didn't,” Trump said. “And I explained that to people. They say, 'Put her in jail, put her in jail.' We won. I said, 'We don't want to put her in jail. We want to bring the country together. I want to bring the country together.'”

“Putting her in prison is not going to unite our country,” Trump argued.

Democrats, meanwhile, wasted no time in making the U.S. look like a Third World banana republic, Trump suggested.

“But once I was released, they started reaching out to me,” the 45th president said. “It's astonishing. They're suffering from a severe case of Trump Derangement Syndrome (TDS), and from their perspective, I don't know if it's treatable.”
